Our Proposed Services
In Fall 2023, a community-based coalition kicked off a Northside BID Formation process by forming a Steering Committee and launching a Needs Assessment Survey.
Nearly 1,000 local stakeholders responded. What the committee heard from property owners, residents, and commercial tenants through surveys, door knocking, and focus groups led us to prioritize these services for the future BID.
Sanitation & Litter Removal
Because sanitation was the number one concern expressed through our district needs assessment survey, our BID proposal includes an extensive sanitation and litter removal program. We will deploy a dedicated team of Clean Ambassadors 7 days a week to sweep sidewalks, empty trash receptacles, remove graffiti, power wash public areas, and remove snow from corners and crosswalks in the winter. As mandated by the City’s pending containerization program, we will also cite and make use of storage containers for trash, to ensure that trash bags stay off the street, mitigating rodents. These efforts, supplemented by regular maintenance of street fixtures and furniture, will ensure that the district remains visually appealing and hygienic for residents, visitors, and businesses alike, and will help prevent property owners and business owners from being ticketed.
Parks/Open Space Maintenance
In partnership with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, we will actively maintain neighborhood parks and green spaces to provide clean, safe, and inviting environments for community use. This includes landscaping, horticulture, trash collection, and repair of park fixtures and furniture. By enhancing these vital public areas, we will promote outdoor recreation, support public health, and contribute to the district's overall quality of life.
Streetscape Improvements
Our streetscape improvement initiatives will focus on long-term beautification and functional upgrades to public infrastructure. This could include installing and maintaining street furniture, planters, street banners, lighting, and public art. These enhancements not only improve aesthetics but also bolster safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.
Public Safety
The BID will work in partnership with local law enforcement to provide an additional layer of public safety throughout the district. A public safety program could include enhanced street lighting, advocacy and partnership with the local precinct, and possibly public safety officers with a visible presence on the street, to assist with quality-of-life concerns and help deter unwanted behavior. We could also invest in technology and lighting to create a safer, more secure environment for everyone. Decisions about a public safety program will be made by property and business owners in the district in response to conditions on the ground at the time the BID is formed.
Business Assistance
Supporting the local business community is a key priority. The BID will offer small business assistance through retail recruitment, small business outreach, data collection, and economic development planning. By helping businesses navigate regulatory processes and access resources, we will foster a thriving and diverse commercial landscape. We will also support small businesses by serving as a collective voice and advocating for their needs with elected officials and City agencies.
Marketing & Holiday Lights
To highlight local mom and pop businesses and foster neighborhood pride, the BID will organize seasonal events, district-wide promotions, and public art installations. We will install festive holiday lights to bring warmth and vibrancy to the community during the winter months. These marketing efforts will not only enhance foot traffic but also celebrate the district’s unique identity, which is defined by its local small businesses.
